OBD-II fault code

C0614: Right Park Brake Actuator Stuck On

What it means

The control module monitors whether the right park brake actuator releases when commanded. It sets this code when the actuator remains applied or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The right park brake actuator releases the right side of the parking brake mechanism when commanded. The brake module monitors that response; C0614 sets when the right actuator remains applied or fails to release as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator stuck on
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a brake-capable scan tool to review freeze-frame data and check whether the right actuator was commanded to release when the fault set.
  2. Check for a parking brake warning and compare the right and left rear wheels for signs that the right brake remains applied.
  3. Inspect the right actuator, connector, wiring, and linkage for debris, corrosion, damage, or binding.
  4. With the vehicle safely secured, command release through the scan tool and compare the right actuator response with the left.
  5. If the actuator receives the release command but stays applied, inspect the right-side actuator and brake mechanism for wear or restriction.

Common fixes

  • Remove debris blocking movement of the right actuator or linkage.
  • Repair damaged or corroded right actuator wiring or connector terminals.
  • Correct binding in the right-side park brake mechanism.
  • Replace the right actuator if it remains applied despite a valid release command.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the right rear brake is dragging, the vehicle pulls, or the wheel becomes hot; continued driving can overheat and damage the brake. If it releases and braking feels normal, travel only as needed to reach a safe repair location because ABS or stability functions may be limited.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
