What it means
The control module monitors whether the right park brake actuator engages when commanded. It sets this code when the actuator fails to respond or perform as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The right park brake actuator moves the right side of the parking brake mechanism when the brake module commands application. The module checks for the expected response; C0613 sets when the right actuator does not engage or move as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator stuck off
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Use a brake-capable scan tool to read freeze-frame data and compare the right actuator command with its reported position or response.
- Check whether the fault occurs during application and compare the right rear wheel behavior with the left.
- Inspect the right rear actuator, connector, wiring, and linkage for debris, damage, corrosion, or a loose connection.
- With the vehicle safely secured, command the right actuator using the scan tool and compare its response with the left side.
- If the right actuator receives the command but does not move freely, inspect the actuator and mechanism for binding or wear.
Common fixes
- Clean debris obstructing the right actuator or its mechanism.
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged right actuator connector or wire.
- Correct binding in the right-side park brake linkage.
- Replace the worn or stuck right actuator if it fails to respond to a valid command.
Can I keep driving?
Treat the parking brake as unreliable and do not rely on it to hold the vehicle; secure the vehicle in Park or gear on a safe, level spot. ABS or stability functions may be limited, so drive only as needed to reach a safe repair location and stop if braking feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
