What it means
The ABS or brake control module detects an open circuit or loss of the left front wheel speed sensor signal. It sets the code when the monitored circuit fails to provide the expected signal while the system is checking wheel speed.
How it works
The left-front wheel-speed sensor A provides wheel rotation information to the brake control module for ABS and related functions. C0500 sets when the module detects an open circuit or loss of the expected signal from that specific sensor while checking wheel speed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Damaged sensor wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
- Failed wheel speed sensor
- Damaged tone ring or encoder
Symptoms
- ABS warning light
- Traction or stability control warning
- ABS or stability functions disabled
How to diagnose it
- Read ABS freeze-frame data and compare the left-front speed with the other wheels to see when the signal disappears.
- Inspect the left-front sensor connector and wiring, especially where the harness flexes near the steering and suspension.
- Check the left-front tone ring or encoder for damage, debris, or a gap caused by loose sensor mounting.
- Test the left-front sensor circuit for continuity and shorts using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring is sound, test the left-front sensor and verify its signal at the module connector.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean the left-front sensor connector.
- Repair an open or damaged section of left-front sensor wiring.
- Replace the damaged left-front tone ring or encoder.
- Replace the left-front wheel-speed sensor if its output fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
Normal braking may remain, but ABS and stability functions can be unavailable, so allow more stopping distance and avoid slippery roads. If a red brake warning appears or braking changes, stop safely and seek assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
