OBD-II fault code

C0503: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The module detects a left-front wheel-speed sensor signal above the expected range. This indicates an electrical signal fault; the code alone does not establish that other vehicle functions are disabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The left-front wheel-speed sensor sends its signal to the brake control module for wheel-speed calculations. C0503 sets when the monitored left-front circuit is electrically higher than the expected range, which is a high-signal condition distinct from a low-signal fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to power
  2. Open or damaged wiring
  3. Damaged connector
  4. Faulty wheel-speed sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live ABS data to confirm whether the left-front reading is abnormally high or fixed while the other wheels change.
  2. Inspect the left-front sensor connector and wiring for exposed conductors, water intrusion, or a signal wire contacting power.
  3. Trace the left-front circuit using the wiring diagram and check for a short to power or an open that could pull the signal high.
  4. Test circuit voltage and sensor output using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
  5. If the circuit checks out, inspect the left-front sensor and tone ring or encoder for damage or incorrect alignment.

Common fixes

  • Clean and properly seat the left-front sensor connector.
  • Repair wiring shorted to power or replace damaged harness sections.
  • Replace a damaged left-front tone ring or encoder.
  • Replace the left-front sensor if testing confirms it is producing an out-of-range high signal.

Can I keep driving?

ABS and stability functions may be limited while the left-front signal is faulty. Drive cautiously and avoid slippery roads or hard braking until the fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
