What it means
The module detects an intermittent left-front wheel-speed sensor signal. This indicates an unstable signal, but does not by itself identify the failed component.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The left-front wheel-speed sensor reports wheel rotation to the brake control module. C0504 sets when that particular signal cuts in and out, so the fault is intermittent rather than a consistently low or high circuit reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose or corroded connector
- Damaged or chafed wiring
- Failing wheel-speed sensor
- Damaged tone ring or encoder
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame or event data and graph the left-front speed alongside the other wheels to identify when it drops out.
- Inspect and gently move the left-front harness and connector while monitoring the live signal, following safe workshop procedures.
- Look for chafing, loose pins, corrosion, or a harness strain point near the left-front steering and suspension.
- Inspect the left-front tone ring or encoder and sensor mounting for damage, looseness, or debris.
- Test the left-front sensor and wiring while flexing the harness, using the manufacturer's specification to identify an intermittent open or short.
Common fixes
- Secure or clean loose or corroded left-front connector contacts.
- Repair chafed or intermittently open left-front sensor wiring.
- Replace a damaged left-front tone ring or encoder.
- Replace the left-front sensor if its signal drops out during testing.
Can I keep driving?
The intermittent fault can disable ABS or stability control without warning, so drive cautiously and leave extra stopping distance. Avoid slippery roads until the left-front signal is stable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
