OBD-II fault code

C0502: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The module detects a left-front wheel-speed sensor signal below the expected range. This indicates an electrical signal fault; the code alone does not establish that ABS, stability control, transmission, or speedometer functions are all disabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The left-front wheel-speed sensor sends a signal to the brake control module, which uses it to calculate wheel speed. C0502 sets when the monitored left-front signal is electrically lower than the module's expected range; this points toward a low-signal circuit condition, not a high reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Damaged wiring or connector
  3. Faulty wheel-speed sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live ABS data to confirm that the left-front reading is low or absent while the other wheel speeds are plausible.
  2. Inspect the left-front sensor connector and harness for corrosion, crushed insulation, or a signal wire contacting ground.
  3. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to check the left-front sensor circuit for a short to ground, poor connection, or damaged return path.
  4. Test the sensor output and circuit at the sensor and module connectors according to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is sound, inspect the left-front sensor and tone ring or encoder for damage that could suppress the signal.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the left-front sensor connector.
  • Repair a signal wire short to ground or other damaged wiring.
  • Replace a damaged left-front tone ring or encoder.
  • Replace the left-front sensor if its output remains below specification.

Can I keep driving?

Treat ABS and stability control as potentially unavailable and leave extra distance, especially on slippery roads. If the brake warning light is on or the pedal feels abnormal, stop safely and arrange inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
