What it means
The module detects a left front wheel speed sensor signal outside the expected range or inconsistent with vehicle conditions. It sets the code when the monitored signal does not behave as expected during operation.
How it works
The left-front wheel-speed sensor A reports wheel rotation to the brake control module. C0501 sets when that signal is present but its range or behavior is implausible for the vehicle's speed and operating conditions, rather than simply identifying an open circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Damaged sensor or wiring
- Dirty or damaged tone ring
- Loose sensor mounting
- Wheel bearing play
Symptoms
- ABS warning light
- Traction or stability control warning
- ABS or stability functions disabled
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph all wheel speeds to see whether the left-front reading is inaccurate, erratic, or drops at a particular speed.
- Inspect the left-front sensor mounting, air gap where applicable, connector, and wiring for movement, dirt, or damage.
- Examine the left-front tone ring or encoder for cracks, missing teeth, corrosion, or debris.
- Check the left-front wheel bearing for play that could change sensor alignment while the wheel turns.
- Test the left-front sensor signal and circuit against the manufacturer's specification, comparing with a known-good wheel if the procedure permits.
Common fixes
- Clean and securely remount the left-front sensor.
- Repair damaged left-front sensor wiring or connector contacts.
- Replace a damaged left-front tone ring or encoder.
- Replace the left-front sensor or bearing if testing identifies it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
ABS or stability control may be disabled if the left-front reading is unreliable. Drive cautiously, especially on wet or loose surfaces, and avoid relying on those functions until repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
