What is the Volkswagen ID.4?

The ID.4 is a compact electric SUV and Volkswagen’s first fully electric SUV. It carries the ID family’s electric design into a taller body, with a dedicated electric platform that makes room for passengers and luggage. The SUV layout gives it a more upright, family-focused role than the ID.3 hatchback.

The ID.4’s listed generation, Generation I, spans 2021 to today. It uses Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform, also found beneath the ID.3.

Engines and power

Every ID.4 in the listed markets is electric. EU registration figures from 2019 to 2025 show power from 70 kW (95 PS) to 250 kW (340 PS). UK figures for 2025–2026 range from 125 kW (170 PS) to 250 kW (340 PS), while Canadian figures range from 150 kW (204 PS) to 250 kW (340 PS).

EU registration entries include 150 kW (204 PS) versions in 2021 and a 210 kW (286 PS) version in 2025.

Fuel consumption and CO₂

The ID.4 runs on electricity, so its energy use is measured in kilowatt-hours rather than litres per 100 kilometres. No consumption or CO₂ figures are included here.

Where was the ID.4 sold?

The ID.4 appears in figures for the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. EU registrations cover 2019–2025, with 364,007 cars registered over that period. UK figures cover 2025–2026, while US and Canadian figures cover 2021–2026. Its compact SUV shape brings the ID family’s electric drive to a taller, more spacious body.
