What is the Toyota Avensis?
The Avensis was Toyota’s European family car, offered as a saloon and estate. It occupied the mainstream medium-size class, with the estate providing extra luggage space. Toyota launched the name in Europe in 1997, and developed the Avensis as a car tailored to European tastes.
The Avensis ran through three generations: T220 (1998–2003), T250 (2004–2008) and T270 (2009–2018). The third generation carried on as a saloon and wagon, designed by Toyota’s European design team and produced in the UK.
Engines and power
In EU entries for 2010–2019, Avensis engines range from 1.6 to 2.2 litres, with petrol, diesel, LPG and other fuel types. Listed power runs from 82 kW (111 PS) to 162 kW (220 PS). Common entries include 2.0-litre diesels and a 1.8-litre petrol version.
UK entries cover petrol and diesel engines from 1.6 to 2.2 litres during 2001–2018. France’s 2012–2015 entries show petrol and diesel versions rated from 91 kW (124 PS) to 110 kW (150 PS).
How economical is the Toyota Avensis?
The lowest listed UK consumption is 4.2 L/100 km on the NEDC test. France’s lowest listed figure is 4.5 L/100 km, also on NEDC. NEDC was the earlier European test procedure; WLTP is used for newer European figures.
Where was the Avensis sold?
EU registrations total 615,904 across 2010–2019. UK entries reach back to 2001, while the French entries cover 2012–2015. The Avensis was closely tied to Toyota’s European operations: the third generation was designed in Europe and built in the UK.
