What is the smart forfour?
The smart forfour is a small four-door, four-seat city car: a roomier companion to the two-seat fortwo. Rear doors and an extra pair of seats make it a useful choice for carrying family or friends around town, while keeping smart’s focus on compact cars.
The W453 was the forfour’s only generation, sold from 2014–2021. It was developed with Renault and shared a technical basis and engines with the third-generation Twingo. Petrol versions were joined by electric models during the generation.
Engines and power
EU versions listed from 2014–2023 span 0.9 L to 1.0 L engines and 31 kW (42 PS) to 99 kW (135 PS). UK figures from 2006–2021 cover 0.9 L to 1.5 L and 51 kW (69 PS) to 80 kW (109 PS). Electric versions are included in the EU and UK figures.
How economical is the smart forfour?
The lowest listed UK and French fuel-consumption figure is 4.2 L/100 km on the NEDC test. European ratings use WLTP or NEDC, depending on the vehicle and year. Where markets are compared, keep in mind that test procedures differ: Europe uses WLTP or NEDC, the USA uses EPA, and Canada uses the 5-cycle test.
Official EU registration figures cover 2014–2023, with 401,542 registrations. The largest listed entries are 1.0 L petrol versions rated at 52 kW (71 PS), particularly in the early years of the generation.
Where was the smart forfour sold?
The forfour appears in EU, UK and French figures. It gave smart’s European city-car range a four-seat option, with room for more passengers than the fortwo.
