What is the Mitsubishi Mirage?

The Mirage is a small hatchback suited to city streets and everyday trips. Its compact shape and petrol engines give it a straightforward small-car character. Mitsubishi has a long history of building compact cars; the original Mirage was developed with an emphasis on making good use of space and fuel.

The Mirage name has appeared on different cars over the decades, and in some overseas markets the model was sold as the Colt. The recent hatchback belongs to the sixth generation.

Mirage generations

The sixth generation ran from 2012 to 2024 in the US and Canada, 2013 to 2020 in European Union figures, and 2013 to 2021 in UK figures. Earlier US generations listed here are the first (1985), second (1985–1987), third (1988–1992), fourth (1993–1995), and fifth (1997–2002).

Mitsubishi introduced the sixth-generation Mirage as a compact global car, with a focus on low fuel use and an easy-to-drive size. It carried the name’s small-car identity into a light hatchback format.

Engines and power

In European Union figures, the sixth-generation Mirage used 1.0- to 1.2-litre petrol engines producing 52 kW (71 PS) to 59 kW (80 PS). UK figures list 1.0- and 1.2-litre petrol versions, with 59 kW (80 PS). US figures span 1.2- to 1.8-litre petrol engines across the Mirage’s listed history, while Canadian entries cover 1.2-litre petrol versions.

Fuel consumption and markets

The lowest listed UK figure is 4.1 L/100 km on the NEDC test. In the US, the lowest figure is 6 L/100 km under EPA testing, with a best combined rating of 39 MPG. Canada’s lowest listed figure is 5.9 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. The results use different procedures: NEDC in Europe and the UK, EPA in the US, and 5-cycle in Canada, so they are not directly comparable.

European Union registration figures cover 2013 to 2020, UK figures 2013 to 2021, US EPA figures 1985 to 2024, and Canadian NRCan figures 2014 to 2024.
