OBD-II fault code

U0512: Invalid Data Received From Seat Control Module D

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from seat control module D. Seat position, memory recall or heating/ventilation values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

Seat control module D sends seat position and supported memory or comfort-function data over the vehicle network. This code sets when a receiving module finds data from module D implausible; which seat and functions that means depends on the vehicle's configuration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan every module and record freeze-frame details to identify the reporting module and related seat or network faults.
  2. Determine which seat and functions are assigned to module D and check their operation, including adjustment, memory, heating, or ventilation if equipped.
  3. Inspect module D's connectors and accessible seat wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or pinching as the seat moves.
  4. Check the module's power and ground under the manufacturer's procedure, since a poor supply can make seat data unreliable.
  5. Compare live seat position and status values with actual operation, then verify network communication and module configuration using vehicle-specific service information.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded connector at seat control module D.
  • Repair damaged or pinched wiring or restore the module's power or ground connection.
  • Correct software or configuration if the fault followed module replacement or programming.
  • Replace seat control module D if its connections, supply, and configuration are correct but it continues to send implausible data.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the affected seat is fixed securely in a safe position. Avoid driving if the seat can shift or will not lock.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
