OBD-II fault code

U054E: Invalid Data Received From Seat Control Module J

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from seat control module J. Seat position, memory recall or heating/ventilation values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

Seat control module J reports seat position and may report memory, heating, or ventilation status over the vehicle network. Other modules check those values for plausibility; U054E sets when a receiving module rejects data attributed to seat module J.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record U054E, related codes, and freeze-frame details to find which module rejected module J's data and under what conditions.
  2. Use live data to check module J's communication status and compare its reported seat position or memory, heating, and ventilation values with actual operation.
  3. Inspect module J's connectors, under-seat wiring, power and ground for looseness, corrosion, or damage, taking care around restraint-system wiring.
  4. Check for a recent seat-module replacement or software change and verify that module J's configuration matches the vehicle and seat.
  5. If the wiring and setup are sound, use the manufacturer's network checks to assess the module's messages and gateway routing.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair a damaged or loose connector or wire at seat control module J.
  • Restore a poor power or ground connection to the seat module.
  • Correct an incompatible module configuration or software mismatch after replacement.
  • Repair or replace module J if its reported seat data remains implausible with sound wiring and correct setup.
  • Repair gateway routing if network tests show module J's messages are being misrouted.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is usually drivable, but seat adjustment, memory, heating, or ventilation controlled through module J may be unavailable. Confirm the seat is safely positioned before driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
