What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the yaw rate sensor module (typically combined with lateral/longitudinal accelerometer). Rotational rate values fail plausibility checks against steering and wheel speed and are rejected; ESC may be inhibited.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The yaw rate sensor module measures how quickly the vehicle rotates around its vertical axis and may also report acceleration data. This code sets when a receiving module rejects its data as implausible compared with information such as steering and wheel speed, which can disable electronic stability control.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the ABS, stability, and other modules for codes and freeze-frame data to see whether U0513 occurred with sensor, wheel-speed, steering-angle, or network faults.
- Check the stability-control warning and live yaw-rate data with the vehicle stationary, where the reading should be consistent with no rotation under the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- Inspect the yaw rate sensor module's connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, impact damage, or moisture.
- Check the module's power, ground, and network connections using vehicle-specific service information before condemning the sensor.
- Compare yaw rate and any associated acceleration data with steering and wheel-speed information during the specified diagnostic checks, then verify sensor configuration or calibration requirements.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connector or wiring at the yaw rate sensor module.
- Restore a faulty power, ground, or network connection to the module.
- Perform the manufacturer-specified configuration or calibration if required after service.
- Update or correct module software if a documented mismatch is identified.
- Replace the yaw rate sensor module if its connections and configuration are correct but its data remains implausible.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may still drive, but stability control can be unavailable and the check-engine light may be on; drive cautiously, reduce speed, and avoid slippery roads or abrupt maneuvers. Have the fault diagnosed promptly because handling assistance may not intervene as expected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
