What it means
An open fault is detected on the negative conductor of vehicle communication bus D. The code identifies the conductor fault but not its cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
Vehicle communication bus D carries messages between the modules connected to it over positive and negative conductors. U0060 identifies an open in the negative (low-side) conductor, which can interrupt communication even if the positive line is intact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus-F high wire broken
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Record all module codes and freeze-frame details, and note whether communication loss is limited to bus D or affects several networks.
- Identify nonresponding bus D modules and compare their faults for clues about where the negative conductor is open.
- Inspect the bus D negative wire, connectors, and splices for a break, loose terminal, corrosion, or prior repair damage.
- With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test continuity of the negative conductor and isolate sections to find the open.
- Check bus D termination and gateway routing against the manufacturer's specification after confirming the negative wire is intact.
Common fixes
- Repair a broken bus D negative conductor or splice.
- Clean, secure, or replace a loose or corroded negative-line terminal.
- Restore a failed bus D termination connection if it is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair or replace the gateway only if testing verifies that it is routing bus D messages incorrectly.
Can I keep driving?
If bus D dependent features or warning lights are affected, keep driving to a minimum because modules may stop communicating or shut down. Stop if a safety related function is impaired, even though this code alone does not confirm limp mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
