What it means
Bus D low-side line voltage below expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Vehicle communication bus D carries data between its connected modules. The control module sets U0061 when the negative (low-side) conductor falls below its expected electrical range, which can interfere with bus D messages.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Record all module codes and freeze-frame data first, checking whether U0061 coincides with other bus D electrical faults.
- Determine which bus D modules do not respond and whether the fault is common to the network.
- Inspect the negative-line wiring and connectors for a short to ground, chafing, moisture, or damaged terminals.
- With power isolated according to the manufacturer's procedure, test the negative conductor for an unintended ground path and check continuity through suspect sections.
- Check termination and gateway routing against the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure once the negative-line wiring is ruled out.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged insulation that is shorting the bus D negative line to ground.
- Repair or replace a connector terminal that is pulling the negative line below range.
- Correct a bus D termination fault if measured values are outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair or replace the gateway only when testing confirms incorrect routing is the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if bus D dependent features are failing or warnings indicate a system fault, because affected modules may lose data or enter limp mode. Stop if an essential function is impaired; continued driving may lead to further loss of dependent features.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
