What it means
A control module detects voltage above the expected level on the positive conductor of vehicle communication bus C. It sets the code when the bus line remains above its calibrated voltage threshold.
How it works
Bus C is a vehicle network that lets connected modules exchange control and status messages over paired wires. U0050 sets when a module detects voltage above the expected range on the positive (+) conductor, which can interfere with messages and make connected systems unavailable or intermittent.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to voltage on bus wire
- Damaged or chafed wiring
- Poor connector connection
- Faulty module driving the bus high
- Charging system voltage problem
Symptoms
- Communication warning lights
- Multiple warning messages
- Intermittent system operation
- Some systems unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Scan every accessible module for network faults and save freeze-frame data, noting whether the code appeared with other electrical or charging-system warnings.
- Check battery and charging-system condition using the manufacturer's test procedure, since excessive system voltage can affect network readings.
- Inspect bus C (+) wiring and connectors for contact with a power feed, damaged insulation, poor pin fit, corrosion, or signs of heat.
- Use the wiring diagram to identify bus C modules and gateway connections, then compare responding and nonresponding modules on the scan tool.
- With power isolated as required, test the positive conductor for an unintended connection to battery voltage and check termination against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the harness checks out, isolate gateway and connected modules per the manufacturer's network procedure to identify a component driving the line high.
Common fixes
- Repair a bus C (+) wire shorted to a power feed.
- Repair damaged insulation or a poor connector connection on the positive conductor.
- Correct a charging-system fault if testing confirms system voltage is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Replace or repair a gateway or module only after circuit tests show it is driving bus C (+) high.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle drives normally and only noncritical functions are affected, a short, cautious trip may be reasonable, but intermittent communication can disable systems without warning. Stop driving if engine, transmission, braking, or steering functions are affected or warning messages indicate unsafe operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
