What it means
Bus C low-side line voltage above expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Bus C uses paired wires to carry messages between control modules, and the negative (-) conductor is one side of that network. U0053 indicates that voltage on this negative line is above the expected range, often due to a short to battery voltage, and the resulting signal fault can disrupt module communication.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to battery
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for network codes and record freeze-frame data and the modules that fail to respond.
- Use the wiring diagram to locate bus C (-), its splices, connectors, gateway path, and termination points.
- Inspect the negative conductor for chafing against a power wire, damaged insulation, loose pins, corrosion, or evidence of previous repairs.
- With power isolated according to the manufacturer's procedure, test the negative line for a short to battery voltage and verify continuity.
- Check the positive conductor and network termination against the manufacturer's specifications to rule out a related bus fault.
- If the harness passes, isolate the gateway and bus C modules using the manufacturer's procedure to find a component feeding voltage into the negative line.
Common fixes
- Repair a bus C (-) wire shorted to a power feed.
- Repair chafed insulation or a damaged connector that allows the negative line to contact voltage.
- Correct a faulty splice or terminal identified by circuit testing.
- Repair or replace a gateway or module only if isolation testing confirms it is feeding voltage onto bus C (-).
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the fault affects engine, transmission, braking, steering, or other safety related systems, or causes limp mode. If only noncritical functions are affected and the vehicle remains stable, limit driving because communication loss can spread to dependent systems.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
