What it means
Bus C low-side line voltage below expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Bus C carries module messages on paired conductors, including the negative (-) line. U0052 sets when voltage on that negative line falls below its expected range, which can happen if the conductor is shorted to ground and can interrupt communication across the network.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan modules for bus C communication faults and preserve freeze-frame data to identify which functions were affected.
- Locate the bus C (-) wire using the wiring diagram and inspect its connectors and harness for crushed, chafed, wet, or contaminated areas.
- Check scan-tool responses across bus C modules and note whether a group of modules or a single connection appears affected.
- With power isolated as the manufacturer directs, test the negative conductor for an unintended short to ground and verify continuity through splices and connectors.
- Check the paired conductor, gateway connections, and bus termination against the manufacturer's specifications.
- If wiring passes, isolate modules under the manufacturer's procedure to determine whether a module or gateway is pulling the negative line low.
Common fixes
- Repair insulation damage or a short to ground on bus C (-).
- Clean or repair a corroded, wet, or damaged connector on the negative line.
- Repair a failed splice or terminal that is grounding the conductor.
- Repair or replace a gateway or module only when testing shows it is causing the low line condition.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving if braking, steering, engine, transmission, or other safety related functions are affected, or if limp mode occurs. If the vehicle behaves normally and only noncritical features are unavailable, keep driving limited and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
