OBD-II fault code

U0056: Vehicle Communication Bus D Performance

What it means

Vehicle communication bus D performance is outside the monitored range. The code does not identify a specific cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

Vehicle communication bus D carries messages among the modules connected to that network. U0056 sets when monitored bus D communication performance falls outside the expected range, which can reflect an intermittent or degraded signal even if the code does not identify a specific wire or module.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring chafed or marginal
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data, noting which bus D modules stopped responding and any companion network codes.
  2. Identify bus D routing, connected modules, and termination points from the vehicle wiring diagram.
  3. Inspect bus D wiring and connectors for chafing, loose terminals, corrosion, moisture, or damage that could cause an intermittent signal.
  4. Compare scan-tool communication across bus D modules and see whether responses change when accessible harness sections and connectors are gently moved.
  5. With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test conductor continuity and shorts, and compare termination with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the wiring and termination pass, use the manufacturer's network procedure to check gateway routing and isolate suspect modules.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or marginal bus D wiring and secure the harness against movement or rubbing.
  • Clean, reseat, or repair a poor bus D connector connection.
  • Correct a termination fault if testing shows it is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace a gateway or module only after wiring and power and ground checks pass.

Can I keep driving?

If communication problems affect safety systems, engine or transmission control, or cause unpredictable operation, do not continue driving. If only noncritical functions are intermittent and the vehicle remains stable, limit driving and arrange diagnosis before the fault worsens.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
