OBD-II fault code

U0051: Vehicle Communication Bus C (-) Open

What it means

Bus C low-side line open. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Bus C exchanges messages among connected modules over two conductors; the (-) conductor is the other side of the pair. U0051 indicates that the bus C negative line is detected as open, which can interrupt network communication and disable functions that rely on those messages.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire broken
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data, noting which modules do not respond and any related bus C faults.
  2. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to trace bus C (-) through its connectors, splices, gateway, and network termination points.
  3. Inspect the negative conductor and its connector pins for breaks, loose fit, corrosion, water damage, or abrasion.
  4. With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test bus C (-) continuity from end to end and check for shorts to ground or voltage.
  5. Check the paired positive conductor and network termination against the manufacturer's specifications to identify related faults.
  6. If the harness is intact, follow the manufacturer's isolation procedure to find a gateway or module connection where the negative line opens.

Common fixes

  • Repair or replace the broken bus C (-) conductor.
  • Reseat or repair loose, corroded, or damaged negative-line connector terminals.
  • Repair a failed splice or previous harness repair identified by continuity testing.
  • Correct a gateway or termination issue only if network tests confirm it.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the communication loss affects safety systems, engine or transmission control, or causes limp mode. If only noncritical features are affected and the vehicle remains predictable, limit driving and have the bus fault diagnosed soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
