OBD-II fault code

P2EA2: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 6

What it means

The exhaust gas temperature sensor on bank 1 sensor 6 reports a circuit high fault. EGT measurement at this position is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 sensor 6 measures exhaust gas temperature at its designated location on the cylinder 1 bank. The control module monitors the sensor circuit and sets this code when the signal is higher than expected. A signal wire shorted to voltage, an open circuit, or a sensor fault can produce that high reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal circuit shorted to voltage
  2. Open circuit
  3. Exhaust gas temperature sensor fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Increased emissions or failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check the bank 1 sensor 6 live reading against other exhaust temperature readings for an implausibly high or fixed value.
  2. Locate bank 1 sensor 6 from service information and inspect its connector and wiring for heat damage, corrosion, or a short to a powered wire.
  3. Check the circuit for an open and verify connector terminal fit before condemning the sensor.
  4. Test the signal circuit for a short to voltage and compare sensor and circuit behavior with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Replace bank 1 sensor 6 only if the wiring is intact and the sensor fails the manufacturer's test.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the bank 1 sensor 6 connector.
  • Repair an open or heat-damaged wire in the sensor circuit.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to voltage.
  • Replace bank 1 sensor 6 if it fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

The engine may reduce performance or emissions control because it cannot rely on the bank 1 sensor 6 temperature reading. Keep driving limited and avoid heavy loads until the fault is diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
