OBD-II fault code

P2485: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit/Open Bank 2 Sensor 5

What it means

A general circuit fault is detected on the EGT sensor at bank 2 sensor 5 (typically just downstream of the turbo or before the catalyst). The ECU loses thermal protection feedback for the catalyst and DPF.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 sensor 5 measures exhaust gas temperature and sends its signal to the control module through a dedicated circuit. P2485 indicates the module detects an open or other circuit fault in that circuit, which can interrupt the reading without proving that the sensor itself is faulty.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in sensor or wiring
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related exhaust-temperature codes to understand when the bank 2 sensor 5 circuit fault occurred.
  2. With the exhaust cool, inspect the bank 2 sensor 5 connector for a loose fit, corrosion, or a pin pushed back into the connector body.
  3. Trace the bank 2 sensor 5 wiring for a break, heat damage, or chafing near the exhaust.
  4. Check circuit continuity and connector contacts using the manufacturer's wiring information and specification.
  5. If wiring and connector checks pass, test bank 2 sensor 5 and the module-side circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the bank 2 sensor 5 connector.
  • Repair a broken or heat-damaged section of bank 2 sensor 5 wiring.
  • Correct a displaced or corroded connector terminal.
  • Replace bank 2 sensor 5 if it fails the specified tests after the circuit is checked.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally and only the check-engine light is on, a short, gentle drive is generally reasonable while you arrange diagnosis. The fault can reduce the reliability of exhaust-temperature feedback used for emissions control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
