What it means
Same as P242D on bank 2 sensor 4. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Bank 2 sensor 4 measures exhaust gas temperature at its location, providing information the control module may use for emissions and DPF management. P2476 sets when the sensor signal is higher than expected, such as when the signal is shorted to a supply or a wire is contacting a battery-positive source.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal shorted to supply
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- DPF or emissions warning light may come on
- Reduced power or limited regeneration may occur
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check the scan-tool reading for bank 2 sensor 4 against other exhaust temperature sensors in comparable conditions.
- With the exhaust cool, inspect the bank 2 sensor 4 connector and harness for pinched insulation, corrosion, loose terminals, or contact with a powered wire.
- Watch sensor 4 live data while gently moving its harness to check for a signal change or recurring fault.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the signal circuit for a short to supply and check connector terminals for poor contact.
- If the wiring checks out, test bank 2 sensor 4 according to the manufacturer's specification before deciding whether it has failed.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged terminal at the bank 2 sensor 4 connector.
- Repair pinched or chafed wiring and reroute it away from powered conductors and hot components.
- Repair a signal wire short to supply.
- Replace bank 2 sensor 4 if it fails testing to the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle drives normally, limit driving to necessary trips while arranging diagnosis. Avoid heavy loads or long journeys if power drops or a DPF warning appears, because incorrect temperature information can interfere with emissions-system management.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
