OBD-II fault code

P2B57: Low Engine Oil Pressure - Camshaft Control Disabled

What it means

Engine oil pressure has fallen below the threshold required for hydraulic camshaft phasing. The ECM disables variable cam control to protect the actuator and lifters.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine's oil pressure supplies the hydraulic force used by variable camshaft control. The module detects pressure below the level needed for cam control and disables that function; low pressure can also threaten engine lubrication.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Engine oil level low
  2. Oil pump worn or pressure relief stuck open

Symptoms

  • Oil-pressure warning light
  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle or reduced engine performance

How to diagnose it

  1. If the oil-pressure warning is on or the engine is making new knocking or rattling noises, shut it off before further checks to limit damage.
  2. Check the dipstick on level ground and correct a low oil level with the specified oil.
  3. Inspect for obvious oil leaks and confirm the oil and filter are the correct type and serviceable.
  4. Read freeze-frame data and any oil-pressure or cam-control live data to see when pressure fell and whether cam control was disabled.
  5. If the warning or code persists, measure actual oil pressure with an appropriate gauge and compare it with the manufacturer's specification before investigating the pump or pressure relief.

Common fixes

  • Top up low engine oil with the specified grade.
  • Repair an external oil leak causing the level to fall.
  • Replace oil and filter if they are incorrect, contaminated, or overdue.
  • Repair the oil pump or pressure-relief fault only after measured pressure confirms the problem.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving with an oil-pressure warning or abnormal engine noise; shut the engine off and arrange safe recovery, because low pressure can quickly damage bearings and other engine parts. If only the check-engine light is on and oil pressure is confirmed normal, drive gently to diagnosis because cam control may remain disabled.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
