What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the exhaust side of bank 1 reports a circuit condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The exhaust camshaft actuator on bank 1 changes valve timing, and position sensor B reports its movement to the control module. This code identifies a fault in that sensor's circuit, making bank 1 exhaust cam position unreliable; it does not specify whether the circuit is low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and inspect live bank 1 exhaust cam position data for a missing, erratic, or implausible sensor B reading.
- Locate sensor B at the bank 1 exhaust cam actuator and inspect its connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, oil intrusion, or physical damage.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring information to check circuit connections and continuity before replacing parts.
- Check the sensor's supply, ground, and signal at the connector following the manufacturer's procedure, since the code does not identify a low or high condition.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor B and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect, clean, or secure the bank 1 exhaust actuator sensor B connector.
- Repair damaged or open wiring in the sensor circuit.
- Replace sensor B if it fails the manufacturer's test with sound wiring.
- Clear the code and verify that bank 1 exhaust cam position data is available and plausible.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed and gently if the engine runs smoothly; reduced power, rough idle, or stalling may occur. Stop if stalling or sudden power loss makes continued driving unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
