What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the intake side of bank 2 reports a range/performance condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The intake camshaft actuator on bank 2 changes valve timing, and position sensor B reports how far it has moved. The control module compares the reported position with the expected bank 2 intake cam position; this code sets when the signal is plausible electrically but its range or response is outside expectations.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor offset drifted
- Actuator mechanism worn
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded with actual bank 2 intake cam position to identify when the mismatch occurs.
- Check engine oil level and condition, since poor oil condition or supply can keep the intake actuator from moving as expected.
- Inspect sensor B at the bank 2 intake cam actuator and its connector for damage, oil intrusion, loose fit, or corrosion.
- Check the sensor B signal and wiring for stable readings while moving the harness gently, using the manufacturer's circuit information.
- If the circuit is sound, compare commanded and actual cam movement during an applicable scan-tool test to distinguish sensor drift from actuator wear.
Common fixes
- Correct low or degraded engine oil and address any cause of contamination.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the bank 2 intake actuator sensor B connector.
- Replace sensor B if its output is offset or unstable despite sound wiring.
- Repair or replace the bank 2 intake cam actuator if it cannot follow commanded movement.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle drive may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration and high loads because power may be reduced. Stop if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses power suddenly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
