What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the intake side of bank 2 reports a circuit high condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The intake camshaft actuator on bank 2 changes valve timing, and position sensor B reports its movement to the control module. This code sets when the sensor B circuit voltage is above the expected range, so bank 2 intake cam position cannot be measured reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open position sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live bank 2 intake cam position data to see whether sensor B stays high or changes during engine operation.
- Inspect the sensor B connector and harness at the bank 2 intake actuator for an open connection, damaged wire, corrosion, or contact with a power feed.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring information to check the sensor supply, ground, and signal circuits at the connector.
- With the circuit isolated according to the manufacturer's procedure, check whether the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage or another power feed.
- If wiring and connections are intact, test sensor B using the manufacturer's procedure for an open or failed sensor.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean and secure the bank 2 intake actuator sensor B connector.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to power or an open circuit in the sensor wiring.
- Replace sensor B if it produces a high signal despite a verified sound circuit.
- Clear the code and confirm that bank 2 intake cam position data changes as expected.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle drive may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid hard acceleration because power may be reduced and the engine may idle roughly or stall. Stop if it stalls or loses power suddenly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
