What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the exhaust side of bank 1 reports a circuit high condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The actuator position sensor B reports the exhaust cam’s position on bank 1, the side of the engine identified as bank 1. The engine control module compares its electrical signal with the expected range; this code sets when that signal is abnormally high, so exhaust cam phasing on bank 1 cannot be tracked reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open position sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare live readings for actuator position sensor B on bank 1 with the commanded exhaust cam position.
- Inspect the bank 1 exhaust actuator sensor, connector, and nearby harness for damage, loose fit, corrosion, or oil intrusion.
- Check the sensor signal and its reference and ground circuits using the vehicle wiring information to identify an open or poor connection.
- With the sensor disconnected as directed by service information, check whether the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage.
- If wiring and connections pass, test sensor B on the bank 1 exhaust actuator against the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose bank 1 sensor connector terminals.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage or an open in the sensor circuit.
- Replace a failed bank 1 exhaust actuator position sensor B.
- Clear the code and confirm the sensor reading follows commanded cam position.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and high engine speeds because bank 1 exhaust cam timing may not be controlled or measured reliably. Reduced power, rough running, or stalling can worsen, so limit driving and stop if the engine stalls or runs severely rough.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
