What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the intake side of bank 1 reports a circuit condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The camshaft position actuator sensor B reports the position of the intake cam actuator on bank 1 so the control module can compare actual cam position with its command. P2B3F identifies a circuit fault in that sensor's signal path, making bank 1 intake cam position unreliable to the module.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live cam-position data for the bank 1 intake actuator, comparing commanded and reported position when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the sensor B connector and wiring at the bank 1 intake actuator for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or oil contamination.
- Check the sensor circuit's power, ground, and signal connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and test procedure.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test sensor B according to the manufacturer's procedure and compare its output with specification.
- If the sensor circuit and sensor pass, check the related module connection and confirm whether the fault returns after repair.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the bank 1 intake actuator position sensor B plug and repair damaged terminals.
- Repair wiring faults in the sensor B circuit.
- Replace sensor B if testing shows its output is faulty.
- Repair a module connection if circuit testing identifies it.
Can I keep driving?
Drive cautiously and avoid hard acceleration because unreliable bank 1 intake cam feedback can cause reduced power, rough running, or stalling. Stop if the engine stalls or runs severely rough, since the fault can affect drivability and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
