What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the intake side of bank 2 reports a circuit low condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The intake camshaft actuator on bank 2 changes valve timing, and position sensor B reports its movement to the control module. This code sets when the sensor B circuit voltage is below the expected range, making bank 2 intake cam position unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live bank 2 intake cam position data to see whether sensor B remains low during operation.
- Inspect sensor B's connector and harness at the bank 2 intake actuator for corrosion, damaged insulation, pin damage, or a wire contacting ground.
- Use the wiring information to check the sensor supply, ground, and signal circuit at the connector before replacing the sensor.
- With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check whether the signal wire is shorted to ground.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test sensor B according to the manufacturer's procedure for an internal short.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor B connector terminals.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or other damaged wiring in the bank 2 intake actuator circuit.
- Replace sensor B if its output remains low with a verified sound circuit.
- Clear the code and confirm that live bank 2 intake cam position data responds normally.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving to a short, gentle trip if the engine runs smoothly, and avoid hard acceleration; reduced power, rough idle, or stalling may occur. Stop if stalling or severe roughness makes the vehicle unsafe to control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
