OBD-II fault code

P28DF: Clutch B Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The clutch B pressure signal does not match plausibility checks against actuator commands. Sensor drift or installation offset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch B pressure sensor reports hydraulic pressure so the transmission control module can compare actual pressure with the pressure expected from its clutch commands. This code sets when the signal remains electrically plausible but does not agree with the module's pressure checks, which can happen if the sensor has drifted or its mounting creates an offset.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor zero point drifted
  2. Sensor mounting loose - bias offset
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live clutch B pressure alongside clutch commands to identify where the pressure reading stops matching the commanded response.
  2. Check for related transmission codes and confirm the data is for clutch B, since other clutch or pressure faults can affect the comparison.
  3. Inspect the clutch B pressure sensor mounting and connector for looseness, damage, or corrosion that could bias the reading.
  4. Check sensor wiring and signal behavior against the manufacturer's specification to rule out an electrical fault before attributing the mismatch to sensor drift.
  5. If the circuit is sound, assess the sensor's zero point and response using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, then verify pressure data after repair.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose clutch B pressure sensor mounting if the manufacturer's procedure permits.
  • Repair corroded or damaged sensor connector wiring affecting the reading.
  • Replace a clutch B pressure sensor that has drifted outside its specified response range.
  • Carry out the specified sensor setup or calibration after installation, if required.

Can I keep driving?

If shifts are slipping, shuddering, harsh, or the transmission has entered limp mode, avoid driving because clutch B may not be controlled from a trustworthy pressure reading. With no symptoms, drive only as needed for diagnosis and avoid towing or hard acceleration.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
