What it means
The output stage for the shift motor reports a low phase voltage on at least one of the U/V/W phases. Short to ground or interrupted half-bridge.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The shift motor uses three electrical phases, U, V, and W, to move the transmission gear actuator. The transmission module monitors the phase output and sets this code when at least one phase is detected too low, which can result from a phase wire shorted to ground or a failed low-side driver switch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Phase wire shorted to ground
- Low-side switch open in driver
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and shift motor commands, then check for other motor or actuator codes that may help identify when the phase fault occurs.
- With power off as directed by the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the shift motor U, V, and W wiring and connectors for ground contact, corrosion, or heat damage.
- Check each phase wire for an unintended short to ground and verify connector continuity against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the harness is sound, use the manufacturer's procedure to assess the shift motor driver outputs and determine whether a low-side output stage has failed.
- Repair the confirmed phase wiring, connector, or driver fault, then verify commanded shift motor operation and clear the code.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded U, V, or W phase connector pins.
- Repair the phase wire that is shorted to ground.
- Repair damaged shift motor harness insulation or connector terminals.
- Repair or replace the shift motor driver if its low-side stage fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts are missing, harsh, or the transmission is locked in one gear, avoid driving because the actuator may not be able to select gears reliably. If the vehicle remains controllable, limit movement to a safe location and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
