What it means
Voltage on the clutch A pressure sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The clutch A pressure sensor sends a voltage signal to the TCM that represents pressure at clutch A. P28CE sets when that signal falls below the expected electrical range, pointing to a short to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or a poor connector connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame data and check live clutch A pressure sensor voltage to confirm that the signal is abnormally low when the code sets.
- Inspect the pressure sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, or a signal wire touching ground.
- With the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer's procedure, check the signal wire for a short to ground.
- Check the sensor supply and ground circuits and connector contact quality against the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test the clutch A pressure sensor output and replace it only if it remains below the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a clutch A pressure sensor signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded pressure sensor connector terminals.
- Restore a damaged sensor supply or ground connection.
- Replace the clutch A pressure sensor if it is internally shorted.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because the TCM may misread clutch A pressure and cause slipping, harsh shifts, or limp mode. Stop if the transmission cannot hold a gear or the vehicle shudders heavily during shifts.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
