OBD-II fault code

P28D0: Clutch A Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The clutch A pressure signal does not match plausibility checks against actuator commands. Sensor drift or installation offset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch A pressure sensor measures clutch pressure for the TCM, which checks whether the signal is plausible in relation to actuator commands. P28D0 sets when pressure feedback does not match those checks, even though the signal may not be electrically high or low; sensor zero drift, loose mounting, or sensor aging can cause this mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor zero point drifted
  2. Sensor mounting loose - bias offset
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame data and compare clutch A pressure feedback with actuator commands and other transmission live data when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the pressure sensor mounting for looseness or damage that could bias its reading.
  3. Check the sensor connector and wiring for intermittent contact, corrosion, or damage that could distort the signal.
  4. With the manufacturer's procedure, compare the pressure reading at rest and during commanded clutch A operation for plausibility.
  5. If mounting and wiring are sound, test the sensor for zero-point drift against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the clutch A pressure sensor if its mounting is loose.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contacts affecting the signal.
  • Correct sensor installation or zero-point setup as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the clutch A pressure sensor if it has drifted outside its calibrated range.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving to a minimum if clutch A is slipping or shifts are harsh, since inaccurate pressure feedback can cause poor clutch control and limp mode. Stop if the transmission cannot maintain drive reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
