What it means
The TCM cannot read a valid signal from the clutch A pressure sensor. Open wiring or sensor failure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The clutch A pressure sensor measures hydraulic pressure used to apply or control clutch A, and its signal is read by the TCM. P28CD sets when the TCM cannot obtain a valid pressure signal, often due to an open signal wire, a failed sensor, or a connector pin that has backed out.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in sensor signal wire
- Pressure sensor failed
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check transmission live data for a missing or invalid clutch A pressure reading.
- Inspect the clutch A pressure sensor connector for a pushed-back pin, poor seating, corrosion, or physical damage.
- Check the sensor signal wire for an open circuit or damaged section between the sensor and TCM using the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Verify the sensor's power and ground circuits according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- If the wiring and connector pass checks, test the clutch A pressure sensor output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat the clutch A pressure sensor connector and secure a backed-out terminal.
- Repair an open or damaged pressure sensor signal wire.
- Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
- Replace the clutch A pressure sensor if testing confirms that it cannot provide a valid signal.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if clutch A slips, shudders, or shifts harshly, because the TCM cannot reliably monitor its pressure and may restrict gear operation. Stop if the vehicle loses drive or shifts unpredictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
