OBD-II fault code

P28D9: Clutch B Motor Underspeed

What it means

The clutch B actuator motor falls below the calibrated minimum speed for the commanded duty. High mechanical load or supply voltage low.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The transmission control module commands the clutch B actuator motor and checks whether its rotor reaches the expected speed. This code sets when the motor runs below the calibrated minimum for the commanded duty, which can result from mechanical binding or a supply voltage that sags under load.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical load increased (binding)
  2. Supply voltage low under load

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and measured clutch B motor speed with system voltage to see whether the fault coincides with a load or voltage drop.
  2. Inspect the battery, charging connections and clutch B motor power and ground wiring for loose, corroded or damaged connections.
  3. Check the actuator connector and wiring for chafing, heat damage or poor terminal contact that could restrict current.
  4. Use the manufacturer's scan-tool actuator test to observe whether clutch B motor speed falls as it moves, which can indicate binding.
  5. Measure supply voltage at the motor circuit under the manufacturer's specified load and check actuator movement and electrical characteristics against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and tighten poor battery, ground or clutch B motor connections.
  • Repair damaged power, ground or phase wiring causing voltage drop.
  • Correct mechanical binding in the clutch B actuator mechanism.
  • Replace the actuator motor if it remains below specification with sound wiring and free movement.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid long trips, towing and heavy acceleration because a slow clutch B actuator can cause slipping, delayed shifts or limp mode. Stop driving if the transmission loses a gear or slipping becomes pronounced, since continued slipping can overheat clutch components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
