What it means
The clutch A actuator motor falls below the calibrated minimum speed for the commanded duty. High mechanical load or supply voltage low.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The clutch A actuator motor moves the clutch mechanism during shifts, and the TCM compares its measured speed with the commanded motor duty. P28CA sets when the motor turns slower than the calibrated minimum, suggesting excess mechanical resistance or low supply voltage under load.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Mechanical load increased (binding)
- Supply voltage low under load
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review live data for clutch A motor command, speed, and supply voltage when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the clutch A actuator, linkage, and coupling for binding, damage, or an obstruction that could make the motor work harder.
- Check the actuator power, ground, and connector wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Measure voltage at the clutch A motor supply while it is commanded to operate, and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
- If supply voltage is sound, test actuator movement and mechanical resistance using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose clutch A actuator power and ground connections.
- Repair damaged supply wiring causing voltage drop under load.
- Free or repair a binding clutch A linkage or actuator coupling.
- Replace the clutch A actuator if it remains slow with correct supply and free mechanical movement.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving, since clutch A may not engage or release correctly and the transmission can enter limp mode or lose drive. Avoid hard acceleration and stop if the vehicle slips, shudders, or cannot shift reliably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
