OBD-II fault code

P28D8: Clutch B Motor Overspeed

What it means

The clutch B actuator motor exceeds the calibrated maximum speed. Load on the motor unexpectedly low or rotor position offset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch B actuator motor moves the clutch mechanism, and the transmission control module monitors its rotor speed against the commanded operating range. This code sets when the motor spins faster than the calibrated maximum, which can indicate that it has lost mechanical load or that its rotor-position signal is offset.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical load lost (broken coupling)
  2. Rotor position sensor offset

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded clutch B motor speed with measured speed and position to identify when overspeed occurs.
  2. Inspect the clutch B actuator connector and wiring, including the rotor-position sensor circuit, for loose terminals or damage that could distort speed feedback.
  3. Check for a broken or disconnected coupling between the actuator motor and the clutch mechanism, following the manufacturer's inspection procedure.
  4. Use the scan tool to observe clutch B position and speed response through the manufacturer's actuator test and look for implausibly fast movement or a mismatch.
  5. If the coupling is intact, test rotor-position sensor alignment and signal integrity against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or replace a broken actuator-to-clutch coupling.
  • Repair loose or damaged clutch B motor and position-sensor connections.
  • Correct rotor-position sensor alignment using the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Replace the position sensor or actuator motor if testing confirms a faulty component.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving because incorrect clutch B motor speed can cause harsh shifts, slipping or unpredictable gear changes. Stop if symptoms worsen or limp mode engages, as continued operation may increase clutch or transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
