OBD-II fault code

P2872: Clutch A Stuck Engaged

What it means

Clutch A cannot leave the engaged state when release is commanded. Torque transfer continues unwanted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch A transfers engine torque while engaged and should release when the transmission commands it to disengage. The transmission module monitors pressure and clutch response; this code sets when Clutch A stays engaged after release is commanded, allowing unwanted torque transfer.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Clutch actuator stuck at high pressure
  2. Hydraulic return path blocked

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame and transmission data, including the commanded Clutch A state and actual pressure during the failed release.
  2. Check fluid level and condition and look for signs of contamination that could interfere with the hydraulic return path.
  3. Inspect the transmission case and accessible wiring and connectors for leaks, damage, or poor connections affecting Clutch A control.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare commanded and actual Clutch A pressure during release and confirm whether pressure remains higher than expected.
  5. If pressure fails to fall, inspect the actuator and hydraulic return path for a stuck high-pressure actuator or blockage using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct transmission fluid level or condition according to the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection affecting Clutch A pressure control.
  • Clear a blocked hydraulic return path in the Clutch A circuit.
  • Repair or replace a Clutch A actuator stuck at high pressure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the vehicle creeps, resists shifting, or cannot disengage Clutch A reliably; unwanted torque can cause harsh shifts and further transmission damage. Stop safely if control or driveability is affected and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
