What it means
Clutch A releases faster than calibrated. Risk of torque interruption and driveline shock.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A transfers torque when applied, and its hydraulic actuator controls how quickly it releases. The transmission module monitors the pressure-release profile; this code sets when Clutch A releases faster than its calibrated time, potentially interrupting torque abruptly and shocking the driveline.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pressure regulator undershoots release ramp
- Increased internal leakage at the actuator
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame and transmission data, then compare commanded and actual Clutch A release time and pressure to verify the fast-release event.
- Check fluid level and condition to rule out a fluid problem that may affect pressure control.
- Inspect the transmission connector and accessible wiring for damage or poor connections that could disrupt pressure-regulator or solenoid control.
- Use a scan tool to graph Clutch A commanded versus actual pressure during release and look for pressure falling faster than the command.
- If the pressure trace confirms a fast release, test the regulator release ramp and check the Clutch A actuator for internal leakage using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level or condition as specified by the manufacturer.
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor transmission connector connection.
- Repair or replace a pressure regulator that undershoots the Clutch A release ramp.
- Repair or replace a Clutch A actuator with excessive internal leakage.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid rapid acceleration or repeated gear changes, since abrupt release can cause driveline shock and worsen clutch or transmission damage. If shifts become unpredictable or limp mode engages, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
