OBD-II fault code

P2874: Clutch B Pressure Disengagement Too High

What it means

Clutch B disengagement pressure exceeds the calibrated maximum. The clutch may not separate cleanly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch B must release cleanly when its hydraulic actuator removes the pressure that applies it. The transmission module monitors Clutch B disengagement pressure; this code sets when pressure during release exceeds the calibrated maximum, so the clutch may not separate fully.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pressure regulator stuck at high output
  2. Control solenoid characteristic drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame and transmission data, then compare commanded and actual Clutch B pressure during disengagement.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition for problems that could interfere with pressure control or release.
  3. Inspect the transmission connector and accessible wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections affecting the Clutch B regulator or solenoid.
  4. Graph commanded versus actual Clutch B pressure during release with a scan tool and verify that actual disengagement pressure stays too high.
  5. If the pressure remains high, test the regulator and Clutch B control solenoid for sticking or characteristic drift using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct transmission fluid level or condition according to the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections in the Clutch B pressure-control circuit.
  • Repair or replace a pressure regulator stuck at high output.
  • Replace or calibrate the Clutch B control solenoid if testing confirms characteristic drift.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration and repeated gear changes because Clutch B may not separate cleanly, causing harsh shifts and additional clutch wear. If shifting becomes unpredictable or limp mode engages, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
