OBD-II fault code

P287A: Clutch B Stuck Engaged

What it means

Clutch B cannot leave the engaged state when release is commanded. Torque transfer continues unwanted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch B transfers torque when applied and must release when the TCM commands it to disengage. P287A sets when Clutch B remains engaged despite a release command, which can keep driving torque applied when the transmission needs the clutch released.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Clutch actuator stuck at high pressure
  2. Hydraulic return path blocked

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live data for Clutch B’s commanded state and actuator pressure when release is requested.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, and look for signs of contamination that could obstruct the hydraulic return path.
  3. Inspect accessible hydraulic lines and connections for damage or blockage affecting Clutch B pressure release.
  4. Use a capable scan tool to command Clutch B release if supported and see whether the pressure or state changes as expected.
  5. Test the Clutch B actuator and hydraulic return path against the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish a stuck actuator from restricted return flow.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level with the specified fluid if it is low.
  • Clear a confirmed restriction in the Clutch B hydraulic return path.
  • Repair or replace a Clutch B actuator that remains pressurized after a release command.
  • Repair internal hydraulic or clutch faults if the actuator releases correctly but Clutch B continues to transmit torque.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the vehicle creeps, shifts harshly, slips, or cannot change gears reliably, because Clutch B may continue transmitting torque when release is needed. Continued driving can overheat or damage the clutch and transmission; stop safely and arrange recovery if control is unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
