OBD-II fault code

P2871: Clutch A Performance/Stuck Disengaged

What it means

Clutch A cannot leave the disengaged state when engagement is commanded. No torque transfer through this clutch.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch A is supposed to apply when the transmission commands torque transfer through that clutch. The transmission module compares the commanded state with pressure and speed response; this code sets when Clutch A remains disengaged after engagement is requested, so it cannot transfer torque.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Clutch actuator stuck at low pressure
  2. Severe hydraulic leak prevents engagement

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame and transmission data, and note the commanded Clutch A state, pressure, and gear when the fault occurred.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition, since low or degraded fluid can prevent the actuator from building pressure.
  3. Inspect the transmission case, connectors, and accessible wiring for leaks, damage, or poor connections affecting Clutch A control.
  4. With a scan tool, compare commanded and actual Clutch A pressure during an engagement command to determine whether pressure remains low.
  5. If pressure does not rise, test the Clutch A actuator and hydraulic circuit for a stuck actuator or leak according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct low transmission fluid or service fluid that does not meet the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair a leaking hydraulic line, seal, or connection in the Clutch A circuit.
  • Repair or replace a Clutch A actuator stuck at low pressure.
  • Repair the Clutch A clutch assembly if it cannot engage after hydraulic pressure is restored.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the vehicle for normal driving; Clutch A may not transmit torque, and the transmission can lose drive or enter limp mode. If the vehicle cannot move reliably or shifts unexpectedly, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
