What it means
Clutch A takes longer than calibrated to release. Pressure does not bleed off quickly enough.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A is a controlled clutch inside the transmission that transfers engine torque when applied. The transmission module monitors its hydraulic pressure and how quickly that pressure falls when release is commanded; this code sets when Clutch A takes longer than its calibrated time to disengage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bleed orifice restricted by debris
- Weak clutch return spring
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame and transmission data, then check commanded versus actual Clutch A pressure and release time to confirm the slow-release event.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since contaminated fluid or debris can restrict a release passage.
- Inspect the transmission connector and accessible wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections that could affect Clutch A pressure control.
- With a suitable scan tool, compare Clutch A commanded and actual pressure during a release event to see whether pressure bleeds down too slowly.
- If the data confirms slow pressure decay, have the Clutch A bleed orifice and return spring checked for restriction or weakness against the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level or service contaminated fluid as specified by the manufacturer.
- Repair a damaged or corroded transmission connector or wiring.
- Clean or repair a restricted Clutch A bleed orifice.
- Replace a weak Clutch A return spring or repair the clutch assembly as indicated by inspection.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and repeated shifting; slow release can cause harsh or delayed shifts, shudder, and clutch wear. If the transmission enters limp mode, loses drive, or shifts unpredictably, stop in a safe place and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
