What it means
Clutch B cannot leave the disengaged state when engagement is commanded. No torque transfer through this clutch.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch B is one of the transmission’s torque-transfer clutches, controlled through an actuator and hydraulic pressure. The transmission control module (TCM) compares the commanded clutch state with its operating data; P2879 sets when Clutch B remains disengaged after engagement is requested, so it cannot carry torque.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Clutch actuator stuck at low pressure
- Severe hydraulic leak prevents engagement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save the code’s freeze-frame data and check live transmission data for the commanded state and pressure or actuator response of Clutch B.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, since low fluid or a leak can prevent Clutch B from building pressure.
- Inspect the transmission and accessible hydraulic connections for leaks that could deprive Clutch B’s actuator of pressure.
- Use a scan tool to command Clutch B if supported, and compare its response with the TCM command to confirm it fails to engage.
- Test Clutch B’s actuator and hydraulic pressure supply against the manufacturer’s specification to locate a sticking actuator or internal leak.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level with the specified fluid if it is low.
- Repair a leaking hydraulic line, seal, or connection supplying Clutch B.
- Repair or replace a Clutch B actuator that cannot build or control pressure.
- Repair internal transmission leakage or clutch damage if pressure reaches Clutch B but it still cannot transfer torque.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are missing, the vehicle slips, or it enters limp mode; loss of Clutch B can leave the transmission unable to select or hold some gears. Continued operation may worsen clutch or transmission damage, so arrange a safe stop and recovery if it cannot move predictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
