What it means
Clutch A reaches the engaged state faster than calibrated. Risk of harsh engagement and shock loads.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A engages as hydraulic pressure moves it into the torque-transmitting state, and the control module monitors the time from its command to confirmed engagement. This code sets when the clutch reaches that state faster than calibrated, which can indicate a regulator overshooting its target or a worn valve body bypass passage disrupting pressure control.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pressure regulator overshoots target
- Worn valve body bypass passage
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare clutch A commanded pressure with the measured pressure and engagement time during the affected shift.
- Note whether the fast engagement causes a sharp jolt specifically as clutch A takes up torque, and check for related pressure-control codes.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition by the manufacturer's procedure, and inspect for signs of a hydraulic control problem.
- Inspect clutch A solenoid connectors and wiring for damage that could cause erratic pressure commands.
- Test regulator output and valve body pressure control against the manufacturer's procedure to identify overshoot or bypass leakage.
Common fixes
- Correct fluid level or condition if it falls outside manufacturer requirements.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring affecting clutch A pressure control.
- Repair or replace a pressure regulator that overshoots its commanded output.
- Repair or replace a worn valve body with a bypass passage that prevents controlled clutch A pressure rise.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid abrupt acceleration because clutch A may engage sharply and send shock loads through the transmission and drivetrain. If shifts become severe or the transmission slips or enters limp mode, stop and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
