OBD-II fault code

P2877: Clutch B Disengagement Time Performance/Too Slow

What it means

Clutch B takes longer than calibrated to release. Pressure does not bleed off quickly enough.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch B is a transmission clutch that releases when hydraulic pressure is reduced. The transmission module monitors its pressure decay and release time; this code sets when Clutch B takes longer than calibrated to disengage because pressure does not bleed away quickly enough.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bleed orifice restricted by debris
  2. Weak clutch return spring

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame and transmission data, then compare commanded versus actual Clutch B pressure and release time.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition, since debris or contamination can obstruct a release passage.
  3. Inspect the transmission connector and accessible wiring for damage or loose connections affecting Clutch B pressure control.
  4. Use a scan tool to monitor Clutch B pressure during release and confirm whether pressure decays more slowly than commanded.
  5. If slow pressure decay is confirmed, inspect the Clutch B bleed orifice for restriction and the return spring for weakness using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct the transmission fluid level or service contaminated fluid as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor transmission connector connection.
  • Clean or repair a restricted Clutch B bleed orifice.
  • Replace a weak Clutch B return spring or repair the clutch assembly if inspection indicates it.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and repeated gear changes because delayed release can cause harsh shifts, shudder, and clutch wear. If the transmission loses drive, shifts unpredictably, or enters limp mode, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
