OBD-II fault code

P2756: Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid

What it means

A general fault in the torque converter clutch (TCC) pressure control solenoid. Lockup feel and slip control are degraded.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid regulates hydraulic pressure used to engage and control converter lockup. P2756 identifies a general fault with this solenoid system, so the title alone does not specify whether the electrical control or hydraulic response is at fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Aged solenoid coil resistance drift
  2. Worn valve body bore around the solenoid

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review commanded torque converter clutch operation, slip readings and transmission temperature with a scan tool.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, since fluid problems can affect clutch pressure and engagement.
  3. Inspect the TCC pressure control solenoid connector and wiring for loose connections, corrosion or damage.
  4. Test the solenoid coil and its control circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If electrical checks pass, have the solenoid's hydraulic response and valve body bore checked for sticking or wear using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or condition if it is outside the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair a loose, corroded or damaged solenoid connector or wire.
  • Replace the TCC pressure control solenoid if testing confirms it has drifted out of specification.
  • Repair the worn valve body bore if it cannot control TCC pressure correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing and sustained high-speed driving if lockup is slipping, shifts are harsh or the transmission shudders. Continued slipping can overheat and damage the torque converter or transmission; stop if drive is lost or the vehicle enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
