What it means
The current through the TCC pressure control solenoid does not match the commanded value within tolerance.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The torque converter clutch (TCC) pressure control solenoid regulates hydraulic pressure for converter lockup. The transmission control module compares the solenoid circuit's measured response with its commanded operation; this code sets when that response is outside the expected range or performance window.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coil resistance changed by thermal stress
- High-resistance contact in solenoid connector
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live transmission data to compare TCC pressure-control commands with the circuit response when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the solenoid connector and harness for chafing, corrosion, moisture, loose pins, or poor terminal contact.
- Check circuit connections and solenoid coil condition against the manufacturer's specification, looking for resistance or contact problems that could affect response.
- If the code appears after warming up, repeat the relevant electrical checks at the temperature where the fault occurs.
- If the electrical circuit checks out, use the manufacturer's procedure to assess solenoid pressure-control operation and related hydraulic response.
Common fixes
- Repair loose or corroded connections at the TCC pressure control solenoid.
- Repair damaged wiring in the solenoid control circuit.
- Replace the solenoid if its coil is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the solenoid's pressure-control fault if electrical tests pass but its hydraulic response does not.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing or prolonged demanding driving if the transmission shudders, slips, or shifts harshly. Continued operation with poor TCC pressure control can increase heat and wear, so stop if the transmission cannot shift safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
